The Velvet Mat Underground exists because movement deserves more than fluorescent lights, forced silence, and the pressure to perform. We created a space where yoga, music, atmosphere, and community come together...part yoga studio, part dance floor, part creative sanctuary beneath the streets of downtown St. Pete.

Our classes range from energizing morning yoga rituals to midday movement breaks for busy downtown professionals, along with welcoming flows for every stage of life, including our vibrant 50+ community. If you’re here to sweat, stretch, breathe, dance, or simply reset, this is a place where you can show up exactly as you are.

We believe yoga doesn’t have to be quiet to be sacred. Music matters. Energy matters. Community matters. Movement can be both powerful and playful, grounding and expressive.

At The Velvet Mat Underground, we honor tradition without being trapped by it, and we welcome beginners, rebels, professionals, retirees, and the “I don’t usually do yoga” crowd alike.

Our Story

The Velvet Mat began the way many good things do: with a yoga mat, a little rebellion, and a community that kept saying yes.

What started as a roaming yoga collective flowing through rooftops, breweries, beaches, and art spaces across Tampa Bay has grown into something even bigger, a home in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg.

Today, The Velvet Mat Underground lives in the historic Kress Building basement on Central Avenue. A rare Florida basement with a bit of speakeasy soul, glowing chandeliers, neon light, and a rock-n-roll heartbeat.

It’s edgy. It’s welcoming. It’s yoga without the ego.

While we now have a home base, the spirit of The Velvet Mat has never been about four walls. We still collaborate with local businesses, host pop-up experiences across the city, and build community wherever the mat lands.

Because at the end of the day, this has never just been about yoga.

It’s about connection and learning.
It’s about showing up for yourself.
And it’s about finding your people.
