It Takes a Village (And Ours Is Pretty Damn Amazing.)

This week's blog is simply a big thank you.
A love letter.
A gratitude moment.
To every local business, nonprofit, artist, musician, coffee shop, brewery, hotel, wellness practitioner, and community partner who has collaborated with us over the years...
Thank you.
The Velvet Mat wouldn't be what it is today without you.
And here's why.
Before there was an underground studio...
Before the purple lights.
Before the velvet walls.
Before there was even a front door to unlock every morning...
There was a yoga mat.
A speaker.
A playlist.
And a community that believed in us.
The Velvet Mat didn't begin inside four walls (and underground!). It began on rooftops, in breweries, coffee shops, beaches, parks, hotel pools, patios, and anywhere someone said, "Yes... let's create something together."
Our local partners took a chance on us long before we had a permanent home.
They didn't just give us space.
They gave us trust.
They introduced us to their communities, cheered us on, shared our events, showed up to practice, and reminded us that the best businesses don't compete...
They collaborate.
That's something I'll never forget.
It's easy to talk about "shopping local."
It's another thing entirely to build genuine relationships with the people pouring your coffee (or beer!), baking your bagels, arranging your flowers, hosting your yoga class, donating raffle prizes, or staying after hours just because they believe in what you're creating.
That's what community actually looks like.
Not transactions.
Relationships.
We still believe in that today.
Opening our studio never meant leaving our community behind.
In fact, it gave us an even bigger reason to get out into it.
That's why you'll still find us teaching on rooftops, partnering with local businesses, collaborating with artists, musicians, authors, florists, breweries, coffee shops, wellness professionals, and nonprofits.
Because wellness doesn't stop at the edge of a yoga mat.
It happens over coffee after class.
It happens while shopping downtown.
It happens when someone introduces you to your next favorite small business.
It happens when neighbors become friends.
Every event we create is another excuse to bring good people together.
And if we're lucky...
Someone walks in thinking they're just taking a yoga class...
...and walks out feeling like they found their people.
That's the real magic.
One partnership.
One conversation.
One hug.
One shared experience at a time.
Every month, we're honored to partner with Dog Bar St. Pete and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay
for Puppy Yoga, with 40% of every ticket going directly back to help shelter animals.
There are adoptable puppies.
There are wagging tails.
There are kisses during Savasana.
And yes...
The puppies have officially volunteered to provide complimentary hands-on assists.
(They're still working on their yoga certifications.)
It's one of my favorite reminders that movement can make a difference, not just for us, but for our four-legged friends, too. (I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying ;)
If you've never joined us, we'd love to see you at Puppy Yoga.
And while you're at it, take a peek at our Events & Workshops page on our website to discover all of the incredible local businesses and organizations we partner with throughout the month both outside and inside the studio. Every collaboration is thoughtfully chosen because we believe our community is stronger when we support one another.
Thank you to every partner who has opened a door, shared a post, hosted a class, donated a prize (and popcorn!), believed in an idea, or simply said, "We're in."
The Velvet Mat may have found a brick and mortar home...
But our heart will always belong to this community.
Here's to many more collaborations, friendships, and opportunities to lift each other up.
Come for the movement.
Stay for the magic.
And always, always support local.
