Equinox Reset: Saucha for the Soul

As the days and nights meet in perfect balance, the Fall Equinox invites us to pause, reset, and realign. This season offers a powerful opportunity for a fresh start, a cosmic deep clean not only of our homes but also of our hearts, minds, and spirits.

In yoga philosophy, saucha (one of the niyamas in yoga) means cleanliness or purification. But it goes far beyond sweeping your floor or wiping down your mat, saucha is about clearing the clutter, releasing stagnant energy, and creating space for what truly matters.

This season, let’s embrace saucha as a soul practice. Because when we clear away what no longer serves, we make room for joy, connection, and magic. ✨

🍂 A Fall Reset Ritual

Here’s a simple ritual you can do this week to align with the equinox energy:

  1. Clear Your Space

    • Open your windows, light a candle, or burn incense/sage.

    • Sweep, tidy, or declutter one corner of your home (or your yoga mat space).

  2. MOVE Your Body

    • Step into a short flow with cleansing twists and grounding balance poses.

    • Imagine wringing out old energy with each exhale.

    • At the Velvet Mat, you know we've got plenty of options to move & yoga with us here in Tampa Bay!

  3. Breathe + Release

    • Practice a few rounds of breathing exercises to stoke inner clarity.

    • Or simply sit in stillness, noticing the balance between inhale and exhale.

    • There are so many apps to help guide you in breath work and meditation if you don't know where or how to start.

  4. Journal Your Reset

    • Write down: What am I ready to release? What am I making space for this season?

    • Let your answers guide your intentions for the months ahead.

  5. Seal with Gratitude

    • Close your ritual by placing your hands at heart center.

    • Whisper a quiet “thank you” for the shift, for the season, and for yourself.

The equinox is a reminder that life is always seeking balance. By practicing saucha, we align ourselves with that natural rhythm... releasing the old, embracing the new, and flowing into the season with clarity and ease.

Just finished a beautiful class hosted by the Velvet Mat and feeling so perfectly balanced, relaxed and happy. Hooli was our yoga instructor. She moved us through a gentle flow that was well led and an ideal combo for an evening class! Also enjoyed the playlist! Then shop owner Erica handed us each a flower for a guided blossom meditation that was such a sweet ending! Will definitely attend another Flower Flow & Meditation again at The Roaming Petal. Velvet Mat has been hosting some fun and unique yoga mashup events ..definitely recommend trying one!

Crystal is my favorite yoga teacher in St Pete! We started going to her community/brewery events and are now regulars at her Monday night class. She has the best music, vibes, and flow of any yoga teacher in town! Take her classes, you'll be glad you did!

Today was my second time ever doing yoga! I won’t lie, I am very ADD, and wasn’t a fan of my first experience, in Texas. I decided to go today with friends and I absolutely fell in love. Her choices of music, to flow with the poses, movements (not sure of correct yoga vernacular) was great! It helped me relax and keep going, all at the same time. Towards the end, with a cool down, her voice was so soothing, and I felt very relaxed and motivated. The stretches were very helpful too! I look forward to going back again sometime! Every instructor needs to be like Crystal.
